Before its success, owners of Barbajean, a brother – sister duo, approached our firm as they ventured to establish their own restaurant in the heart of Dingli. The client required support in developing a standout restaurant concept and brand that would also drive traffic to its non-central location. The vision? To create a casual fine dining experience, unlike anything on the island, that was contemporary, playful and had an instagrammable experience at every touchpoint.
We first began at the heart of the project – establishing the restaurant’s positioning, audience and concept in line with the client’s vision for the brand. A destination for experience seekers and food enthusiasts, that set itself apart by telling a compelling brand story across every touchpoint, with every detail reflecting its flair for creativity, passion for food and commitment to service. With the positioning defined, creative work began on naming for an approachable, friendly and memorable restaurant. Our inspiration for the name and brand was creating a story around the village of Dingli, with a Mediterranean look and feel. Barbajean captured all the objectives. The Maltese word for the local barn owl, Barbajean also pays homage to the chef-patron whilst simultaneously providing endless branding and storytelling opportunities.
In creating the logo and brand elements, the originality of the brand comes to fruition. The design of the logo itself is bold and playful, with the barn owl’s eyes found in the ‘B’, its beak in the ‘E’ and feet in the ‘A’. Patterns and illustrations were also developed to further the brand story and reflect the locality which is intertwined with the brand identity. Feathers and footprints. The Blue Alkanet flower which grows in Dingli. Malta’s oranges. The Dingli coast. The owl. A sardine. No detail spared, inviting conversation and creating dynamic ways to activate the brand. Barbajean was successfully launched in Malta, quickly gaining media and influencer traction and praise. The restaurant is highly recognised for its creativity, vibrancy and uniqueness. It consistently delivers the Barbajean experience to its patrons from start to finish. Barbajean continues to receive rave reviews, becoming a Dingli destination.
