United Group: 100 Years, Quietly Built
THE BRIEF

A hundred years gives a business plenty to look back on. For United Group, the more important question was what the milestone could make possible next.

The Group had earned a strong reputation among the people and organisations closest to it. It was known as principled, dependable and long-term in outlook. Yet its intentionally low-profile presence meant the full scale of the business, the breadth of its portfolio and its direction for future growth were less widely understood. Individual businesses were often more visible than the Group behind them.

The centenary created an opportunity to change that carefully. Recognising the strategic importance of the moment, United Group appointed Steves&Co to lead this critical project and develop a platform that could connect its legacy with its future ambitions.

United Group needed more than a commemorative mark or a year of anniversary messaging. It required a strategic platform that could bring its history, current activities and future ambitions into one credible narrative, strengthening its position in Malta, supporting its growing international presence and introducing its leadership across generations with the right level of visibility.

The challenge was to make the Group better understood without making it feel louder. To acknowledge a century of progress without slipping into nostalgia or self-congratulation. And to ensure the campaign worked as hard for the future of the business as it did for the milestone itself.

OUR APPROACH

We started with the people who knew the business best.

Through a focused leadership workshop, we mapped United Group as it stands today: its activities, reputation, priorities, sensitivities and long-term direction. This gave us the substance needed to define the communication architecture for the centenary year, from the central narrative and reputation pillars to leadership positioning, visibility parameters and the wider campaign roadmap.

One principle shaped everything that followed: quiet confidence, not self-congratulation.

We positioned the centenary as a point of continuity rather than a finish line. The story moved between heritage, responsible leadership, disciplined growth, international development and long-term responsibility. Each theme was grounded in real business activity, allowing the campaign to look forward while remaining true to the values that had carried the Group across four generations.

From strategy, we built the identity.

The centenary mark uses clean, refined lines to reflect the Group’s measured character. Its flowing structure connects past, present and future, while the restrained use of gold represents longevity and sustained value rather than celebration for its own sake.

We then translated the strategy into a phased communications programme spanning the anniversary identity, digital assets, a dedicated web experience, social media, thought-leadership content, PR and editorial features across key Maltese publications.

Every channel had a clear role. Owned platforms established the narrative. Social content made the Group’s story more accessible. Long-form articles gave its experience and direction room to breathe. Strategic media placements extended that story to the audiences shaping Malta’s business landscape.

THE IMPACT

The campaign has introduced a clearer and more contemporary expression of United Group, one that brings greater visibility to the business without losing the discretion that defines it.

The new anniversary identity has created a consistent thread across digital content, social media, editorial communications and physical applications. What could have become a collection of disconnected anniversary materials now works as one recognisable campaign with a shared narrative and purpose.

The launch has also given United Group a stronger platform from which to tell its full story. Its heritage now sits alongside the business it is today: active across mobility, automotive and property, expanding its investment interests in Malta and Austria, and preparing the next generation to contribute to what comes next.

Through social media, public relations and long-form editorial content, the campaign is beginning to extend recognition beyond the Group’s established network, with audiences responding to its combination of heritage, business relevance and future direction.

This is already reflected in the campaign’s performance, generating close to 300,000 in Facebook reach, more than 120,000 LinkedIn impressions and over 1,200 engagements across both platforms. Nearly 2,500 link clicks and more than 2,200 profile visits further indicate a growing willingness to explore the Group beyond individual pieces of content, while continued follower growth is helping to build a broader audience around the brand and its anniversary story.

The work has already achieved something more enduring than a centenary celebration. It has given United Group a communication platform built to last beyond the anniversary year, turning 100 years of experience into a stronger position for the century ahead.
